So, you’ve found a lot of information online about Bio-Identical Hormone Replacement Therapy (BHRT)—you know what it is and how it can benefit you. But you’re still not sure about undergoing treatment. Sometimes you need a little more information before you can make a decision.
So what information are you missing? There’s not much information out there about what you can expect during and after the procedure, and for some people, the procedure is the scariest part.
To put your mind at rest, we decided to dedicate an entire post to the subject. That way, you have all the information you need to make a well-considered decision and feel comfortable moving to the first step, making the appointment.
By understanding the insertion process and what to expect in the first few months, you’ll be prepared for potential side effects and ready to enjoy all the benefits BHRT has to offer.
Let’s Start with Making An Appointment
The first step is to make an appointment with a provider who is experienced with and knowledgable about BHRT.
You can find these kinds of providers in private practices or even clinics solely dedicated to Hormone Replacement Therapy.
At OneLife Medical Center, one of our specialties is Hormone Replacement Therapy. EvexiPEL pellet therapy is our preferred method of administering bio-identical hormones.
Since we practice this BHRT every day, we’ll use our procedure as an example of what you can expect from a BHRT procedure.
Set up a consultation with us! During your in-office appointment, we will determine if you are eligible for BHRT. You will fill out the EvexiPEL questionnaire. We will discuss your medical history and go over any concerns you have.
2. Lab Work
If you are a BHRT candidate, we will perform extensive lab work in our office. Based on your bloodwork, we will determine the amount of hormones needed to bring your hormones back into balance. We will customize your BHRT journey back to optimal health to fit your needs.
3. Pellet Insertion
If you are a candidate for BHRT using EvexiPEL pellets, they are ready for a pellet insertion. Pellet insertion will occur at an in-office visit. Before we insert the pellets, we will discuss supplements that may support your pellet therapy.
Pellet insertion is a quick five-step process that is easy and relatively painless.
- We will ask you to lay down on your side on the exam table. Your provider will choose the very best location to insert your pellets with ease.
- We will then clean and numb the insertion site. The numbing medicine may sting slightly.
- We will then make a 3-4mm small incision. You may feel slight pressure. We will be sure to clean up any drippage.
- We will now insert the rice-sized hormone pellets. You may feel some slight pressure.
- We will cover the insertion site with Steri-strips and a small bandage. Your insertion site may be tender, so be gentle with it.
4. After Care
After the procedure, you will be provided with instructions on what to expect in the weeks and months following insertion, as well as treatment plan documents.
Everything will be written down in detail for you to take home. That way, you don’t have to remember anything.
What Happens Next?
Some patients feel an improvement in as little as four weeks, but full optimization can take up to six months. Because each person is unique, everyone has their own experience with hormone replacement therapy.
Some people won’t experience any side effects, while others may experience unexpected side effects in the first few weeks.
OneLife Medical providers are extensively trained to help prevent any nuance side effects, but if you should experience any unwanted side effects, we are equipped to treat them.
Knowing what changes could come up during BHRT—physically, mentally, and emotionally—can help you deal with them if they happen.
Knowing how long a side effect may last can help you handle them with more ease.
When Will I See Results and What Will They Be?
It depends on the hormone and the dosage, but you should start noticing changes within the first couple of months, if not the first few weeks.
If you are taking BHRT to relieve menopause symptoms, you probably want an overnight fix. Be patient.
Over time you should experience:
- Recovered concentration
- You know how stress can take a toll on your health, especially on your hormonal health, so take the time to get your stress under control.
- Improved sleep
- Poor sleep too often will disrupt your circadian rhythm and affect its ability to release certain hormones. Make getting good sleep a priority!
- Fewer hot flashes
- Better mood
- More energy
- Less joint pain
- Beneficial changes to your vagina
Men who receive testosterone treatment should notice an increase in sexual interest within the first three weeks. Depression and joint pain should decrease by the six-week mark.
And within three months, you should notice:
- Improved blood circulation
- Better erections
- Changes in your lean body mass and fat mass
- Improved muscle strength
